Artificial muscles restore ability to blink, save eyesight

Surgeons from UC Davis Medical Center have demonstrated that artificial muscles can restore the ability of patients with facial paralysis to blink, a development that could benefit the thousands of people each year who no longer are able to close
their eyelids due to combat-related injuries, stroke, nerve injury or facial surgery.
In addition, the technique, which uses a combination of electrode leads and silicon polymers, could be used to develop synthetic muscles to control other parts of the body. The new procedure is described in an article in the January-February issue of the Archives of Facial Plastic Surgery. More

'Donda West Law' in force in California

As of Jan. 1, the much publicized “Donda West Law” is in effect in California, United Press International (UPI) reports.
The law, named after rap artist Kanye West’s mother, who died a day after cosmetic surgery in 2007, prohibits doctors from performing elective cosmetic surgery without a physical examination and
clearance from a medical professional.

Cosmetic surgery is often seen as a women's interest however in the U.K. at least, more and more men are starting to take a greater interest in their appearance.
Almost one in five Botox patients in the UK are now said to be male. The trend is mainly down to two influences –
the tough job market where personal appearance can make or break an interview, and the fact that more and more male celebrities (such as Simon Cowell and Gordon Ramsay) are coming clean about their cosmetic treatments.

A hair-loss expert says results of a recent online survey do not begin to tell the story of how popular hair-restoration procedures have become, news source PRWeb.com reports.
The survey, conducted by Harris Interactive on behalf of RealSelf.com, suggests that more women would rather have hair replacement than a Botox procedure, and that the former is the second-most-demanded cosmetic treatment for men.
