Dr. Robert Lefever: The NHS should pay nothing for botched private sector cosmetic surgery
Daily Mail    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
In 2010, the government deregulated the provision of nonsurgical cosmetic procedures. No longer were they supervised by The Care Standards Commission. Not necessarily as a direct result, cosmetic laser therapy clinics — used for the treatment of thread veins, wrinkles, hair removal and skin resurfacing — took off. Now there are nearly 10,000 in the U.K. A laser unit from China costs as little as £5,000 ($6,423). Training to use one can be minimal. When the procedure is botched, burns and scalds can occur. This may result in scarring, for which the patient may then seek further cosmetic surgery from the NHS. More

Benefits of permanent suture fixation techniques appeal to demanding fan base
Cosmetic Surgery Times via ModernMedicine    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Resuspension of the SMAS with permanent fixation sutures through minimal incisions offers patients the "pick-me-up" of a facelift without the scars, anesthesia and recovery that typically are associated with a traditional surgical facelift procedure, says Dr. Steven B. Hopping, director of the Center for Cosmetic Surgery and a clinical professor of surgery at George Washington University in Washington, D.C. According to Hopping, this permanent suture fixation technique particularly is appealing to men and younger patients because they are most sensitive about wanting to avoid a "surgical" look and visible scars. Experience with fat grafting as soft-tissue filler shows regenerative effects on aged, damaged skin
Cosmetic Surgery Times via ModernMedicine    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Autologous fat grafting is a safe, effective and durable technique for soft-tissue augmentation, but more importantly, the fat grafts also have regenerative activity that has implications for restoring aged and damaged skin to a healthier condition, says Dr. Sydney R. Coleman. "Fat grafts are much more than fillers that add volume and recreate fullness. They also stimulate tissue repair and rejuvenate skin quality, and my observations are that these benefits are progressive and long-lasting," says Coleman, clinical assistant professor in the department of plastic surgery at New York University Medical Center. Improving necks with laser lifts
WABC-TV    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
It's a part of the body that millions of women and men hate, but don't exactly know what to do about it. "I tease my daughters that I want to get rid of my turkey neck," Mary Sanzone said. Sanzone always has been self conscious of her neck and chin. "I just think it's one of those things that comes with age and it's one of those facts of life that you kind of have to live with," she said. Not so, says Dr. Matthew Schulman as he performs what he calls a laser neck lift on Sanzone. It's a procedure Shulman developed by combining existing technologies. More

'Human Barbie' defends her plastic surgeries, parenting
TODAY via msnbc    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
"People in the U.K. just don't seem to get me," self-confessed plastic surgery addict and "Human Barbie" Sarah Burge of Cambridgeshire, England, said recently. The 51-year-old mother of three has made headlines by spending more than $800,000 getting herself surgically enhanced — and for encouraging her young daughter to go under the knife as well. "I really do wish the media would concentrate more on my professional side rather than this absolute baloney that they're dishing out continuously," Burge told Ann Curry on TODAY. More

SickKids plastic surgeons have created smiles 300 faces wide
Toronto Star    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
When he was 4, Joshua Storey had surgery to have his tonsils removed. "On the night we left the hospital, he started to get upset and cry. He said, 'I thought this surgery was going to make me have a smile like yours,'" his mother Karen recalls. The Peterborough, Toronto, boy, now 6, was born with bilateral facial palsy, caused by underdevelopment of the seventh cranial nerve, which controls movement of the facial muscles. That means one side of his face is paralyzed and Joshua is unable to smile. But maybe not for much longer. In February, Joshua underwent the first of two surgeries at SickKids to restore his ability to smile, led by plastic surgeon Dr. Ronald Zuker, the worldwide authority on facial reconstruction. More
